This listing is for a an incredible veg-tanned cowhide from a tannery recently awarded with the Tannery of the Year: Europe Award. This is a more expensive leather, and it looks and feels (and smells) amazing.
It is vegetable tanned and dyed through, retains its full-grain, and has an oiled waxed finish that has a soft polished sheen. For this "black-navy", the grain shows an amazing depth of color, and the flesh is a lighter shade and soft feel without long fuzzies--almost like a quality garment suede. This hide the navy dominates, and the flesh side is blue, but in some angles, the black is more dominant on the grain side.
The hide has a very slight pull-up effect, and light scuffs can be buffed out, but as most veg-tans leather do, it will shows its life and improve with age.
This is about 5.5-6oz thick, and is "medium" temper--it's supple, but firm and tough and and will hold acoustic, and most solid body instruments well. This is not a latigo, so there may be some minor stretching, or easing, as it wears in.
The main strap is hand cut either 2 1/2" wide and tapers from 5" from the front peg end down to 1 1/2", and very slightly along the slot end, which has about 11 slots at 1" increments, OR 2" wide with similar taper in the front, but only eased corners on for the slot end.
Since this is veg tan, I have decided to offer two main variations: hand burnished edges, or as-cut edges (both have beveled corners to ease/remove the visually sharp edge). Hand burnishing entails sanding, then application of clear Tokonole, and then burnishing with canvas or linen cloth until a soft sheen appears on all edges, holes, and slots. (Photos of the strap are as-cut, and not the burnished version).
And as I make this to order, I am offering two length options for the 2 1/2" wide version and 2" wide "Traveler" version:
STANDARD is total of about 46" to 55" (note, this is actually 2" shorter than my Standard on my other straps--but this is the longest I can get out of this hide, unless you want a longer adjustment strap--please ask!).
SHORTER is about 4" less, for total of about 44 to 53"
Sadly due to the size of the hide I obtained, my usual longer option was not possible--but please message me as I may be able to get another inch or two for the main strap, and/or a longer adjustment strap.
Eleven adjustment slots are cut for the 1" wide adjustment strap to loop through the chosen slot weave through the other slots to provide the desired length and fixes to the back pin on the guitar. I cut this adjustment strap to about 22", with about 18" to the peg hole itself from the first slot it's looped into.
Since I cut these myself, I can often modify the length or spacing to get the fit that works for you (limit is size of the hide/strap blanks I have on hand). Feel free to message me if you want something specific peg hole to peg hole!
The holes for the front peg is punched at 5/16", and rear tab is 3/8", unless you request otherwise. Each end has a small slit that ends with a small hole for a "keyhole" effect to prevent tears and to make the strap easy to install & remove. The hole and can accommodate most pegs, but remains securely in place. If you do have a specific peg size or strap lock you need to fit, please let me know when you order.
The design means the strap is only leather, and there is no metal or plastic hardware that could annoy you while you're playing, or your knock into you instrument while it's being moved or stored. And I have softened the cut edges with a small bevel tool, so there is a gentle transition from the top surface to the edge.
I show my laser etched logo near the front peg hole and on the adjustment strap. If you want me to leave this off, please note this in the order.
I can also provide coordinating leather "laces" if you prefer to tie the strap to the neck of the guitar, rather than using a front peg. There is no extra charge for these when you order the strap, but please note in the order you want it included.
If you have any questions, please message me!
