This is a lovely dark brown "Rain Dance Java" oil tanned cowhide that is 5-6 oz (just under 1/8") for the latest 2 sides I have, and very supple, and has a well worn feel like vintage leathers due to the additional tumbling, but it is strong and minimal stretch, and will wear well for acoustic instruments, and lighter weight solid body ones. (Prior hides were 6-7oz, but the 5-6oz range may ease a bit more with heavier instruments).
This top grain hide has enough oils in it so it does not feel dry--for my new sides acquired at the end of 2025, it's very dark, but will likely lighten with time, though buffing, especially with leather conditioner) will bring the oils back to the surface & darken it again, and light scuffs and marks can be easily rubbed out. This is a through-dyed leather, so the color is consistent through the cross section, which also helps hide any scuffs that may happen on the grain.
The strap shown is an example of the lightest color this leather could be--this is not on all straps, but the one pictured, which is LONGER, has the greatest amount, and the camera actually exaggerated this color difference--it's much more subtle in "real life". But this can add to the distressed look that can develop over time, imagine a worn bomber jacket....
I show this strap with a piece of black and the popular "distressed brown" leather for color comparison. The underside, or flesh side, is lighter than the grain side, but is fully through dyed, and the edges are the same as the flesh side.
The slot/adjustment strap weave design means the strap is only leather, and there is no metal or plastic hardware that could annoy you while you're playing, or your knock into you instrument while it's being moved or stored.
Options are for width and length. 2 1/2" wide in shorter, standard, or longer, and 2" wide "Traveler" is shorter length, with 1" adjustments:
Shorter: 44 - 55" range
Standard: 47 - 58" range
Longer: 50 - 60" range
(these are approximate hole to hole, so if you need specific length, please include note, and I will optimize your strap for that. If you need another length range, please message me first, especially if longer, so I can confirm I have the leather for that).
My standard sizing for the peg holes is the FRONT peg hole is punched at 5/16", and REAR peg hole is 3/8". Each end has a small slit that ends with a small hole for a "keyhole" effect to prevent tears and to make the strap easy to install & remove. The hole and can accommodate most pegs, but remains securely in place. These sizes are based on Taylor & Martin acoustic guitars, so if you have a specific peg size or strap locks you need to fit, please let me know and I can make a strap to suit the size you need.
Personalization/custom artwork is an option by laser etching--details are in listing "custom artwork for plain leather strap", but please do let me know if you have questions before ordering. This leather etches nicely, demonstrated by Acoustic Needle logos etched on the front of the main strap and end of the adjustment strap.
The main strap is hand cut to 2 1/2" wide and tapers slightly at either end, and I soften the cut edges with a small bevel tool, so there is a gentle transition from the top surface to the edge. I cut the adjustment strap to about 22", with about 18" to the peg hole, so the overall length can be adjusted with eleven 1" wide slots punched in for the adjustment strap to weave through to set your size.
But since I cut these myself, and pending how much of the leather I have left, I usually can modify the length, width, or spacing to get the fit that works for you. Or you can add more peg holes in this back strap for finer adjustment as you wear it in.
This is also laser etched just above the front peg hole and on the adjustment strap with my new brand logo, Acoustic Needle.
I can also provide coordinating leather "laces" if you prefer to tie the strap to the neck of the guitar, rather than using a front peg. There is no extra charge for these when you order the strap, but please note in the order you want it included.
